Former Super Eagles defender Michael Emenalo has officially stepped down as Chief Football Executive of the Saudi Pro League after completing a transformative three-year spell in one of the fastest-growing football competitions in the world.
The 59-year-old also vacates his role as head of the Player Acquisition Center of Excellence (PACE), a department established to oversee transfer strategy, recruitment policy, and football operations across Saudi clubs.
Michael Emenalo Ends Successful Saudi Pro League Project
Reports indicate that Emenalo’s departure is not linked to any dispute or underperformance but is instead the natural conclusion of a project he was originally hired to deliver.
Since joining in 2023, the former Super Eagles defender has played a central role in modernising the league’s structure and elevating its global profile through strategic recruitment and governance reforms.
He is now expected to return to Europe, with sources suggesting he is open to spending more time with his family while exploring the next stage of his career in football administration.
Saudi Pro League Transformation Under Michael Emenalo
During his tenure, Emenalo helped shape the Saudi Pro League’s aggressive transfer strategy, which saw world-class players move to the Middle East while also encouraging clubs to invest in younger international talent.
His influence extended beyond transfers, as he also helped introduce more structured governance systems, improved transfer regulations, and long-term sustainability frameworks designed to modernise league operations.
In a farewell message, Emenalo reflected on his impact, stating:
“We set out to do something few believed possible. I leave our league on a strong footing, well positioned for continued success.”
Ex-Super Eagles Defender Builds Global Executive Reputation

Before his move to Saudi Arabia, Emenalo built a strong reputation in European football.
At Chelsea, he played a key role in recruitment during a highly successful era, helping identify and sign top talents such as Eden Hazard, Kevin De Bruyne, and N’Golo Kanté.
He later worked at AS Monaco before taking up the Saudi Pro League challenge, further strengthening his profile as one of football’s most experienced and respected executives.
What Next For Michael Emenalo After Saudi Exit?
With his Saudi Pro League project completed, Emenalo’s next move is already attracting attention from several clubs and organisations across Europe.
While no official negotiations have been confirmed, his experience in elite recruitment and football governance makes him a highly sought-after figure in global football administration.
For now, the former Super Eagles star leaves Saudi Arabia having helped reshape the league’s identity and long-term direction.
