Coventry are set to add another Nigerian international to their squad after agreeing a deal for Nottingham Forest striker Awoniyi.
Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi is closing in on a move to Coventry City after the newly promoted Premier League club reached an agreement with Nottingham Forest for his permanent transfer.
The deal was reported by Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, with Awoniyi undergoing his medical as the move moves towards completion.
The transfer would see the Nigerian forward begin a new chapter in his Premier League career under Frank Lampard, with Coventry looking to add more firepower to their squad ahead of their return to England’s top flight.
Coventry secured promotion to the Premier League after winning the 2025-26 Championship and have been active in strengthening their squad for the new campaign. Nigeria midfielder Frank Onyeka is already part of Lampard’s squad, meaning Awoniyi could join another Super Eagles player at the club.
Awoniyi’s Nottingham Forest chapter
Awoniyi joined Nottingham Forest in 2022 after impressing during his time in Germany with Union Berlin.
The Nigerian striker became an important figure in Forest’s fight to establish themselves in the Premier League, scoring several crucial goals during his time at the City Ground.
Among his memorable moments was his goal against Arsenal in May 2023, which secured a 1-0 victory and confirmed Forest’s Premier League survival.
Across his Forest career, Awoniyi made more than 100 appearances in all competitions and scored 23 goals, according to current reports. His Premier League record stands at 21 goals, according to the league’s player profile.
His departure will bring an end to a four-year spell in Nottingham, with Forest supporters expressing their disappointment at the prospect of losing a striker who played a significant role during some important moments in the club’s recent history.
Why Coventry want Awoniyi
For Coventry, the proposed signing represents an attempt to add proven Premier League experience to an attack preparing for the demands of top-flight football.
Awoniyi’s physical presence, pace and experience at the highest level could give Lampard another option in the final third as Coventry prepare for their first Premier League campaign since returning to the division.
Coventry’s first league match of the new season is away to Arsenal on August 21, meaning the club is continuing to strengthen its squad with the Premier League campaign fast approaching.
If the transfer is formally completed, Awoniyi will have the opportunity to revive his fortunes with regular football and help Coventry establish themselves in the Premier League.
