Nigeria’s Super Falcons head into their final Group Stage fixture at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) knowing that victory over Egypt alone may not be enough to guarantee a place in the knockout rounds.
The nine-time African champions bounced back from a disappointing 3-2 defeat to tournament debutants Malawi with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Zambia, keeping their qualification hopes alive ahead of the decisive final round of matches.
With one game left to play, Malawi lead the group with six points, while Nigeria and Zambia have three points each. Egypt remain rooted at the bottom of the table without a point, making the Super Falcons’ clash with the North Africans a must-win encounter.
Nigeria’s Qualification Scenarios
The Super Falcons’ first objective is straightforward — defeat Egypt.
If Nigeria fail to win, their hopes of progressing to the quarter-finals will come to an end.
However, even with three points against Egypt, Coach Justin Madugu’s side will still have to monitor the outcome of the other Group fixture between Malawi and Zambia, which will be played simultaneously.
Should Malawi either defeat or draw with Zambia, a Nigerian victory over Egypt would be enough to secure qualification for the knockout stage.

The qualification picture becomes more complicated if Zambia defeat Malawi.
Such a result would leave Malawi, Zambia and Nigeria level on six points, forcing the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to separate the teams using the tournament’s official tiebreak criteria.
Goal difference, goals scored and head-to-head records among the tied teams could all become decisive factors.
One scenario that could work against Nigeria is a high-scoring one-goal victory for Zambia, particularly if the match produces four goals or more. In that case, the number of goals scored among the tied teams would carry significant weight, potentially leaving the Super Falcons at risk of elimination despite defeating Egypt.
For example, if Zambia beat Malawi 3-2, Nigeria would likely need a convincing victory over Egypt to improve their standing in the tiebreak calculations. A win by at least three goals would strengthen their chances of progressing, while a significantly larger margin could even see them finish as group winners depending on other statistical factors.
Suspension Blow for the Super Falcons
Nigeria will also have to navigate the crucial encounter without two important players.
Defender Tosin Demehin is suspended after receiving a red card in the victory over Zambia, while midfielder Jennifer Echegini will also miss the match after accumulating two yellow cards during the group stage.
Their absence presents another challenge for the Super Falcons as they attempt to secure a place in the quarter-finals of Africa’s biggest women’s football competition.
