Several Nigerian players reported missing cash while staying in Morocco ahead of their opening fixture against Malawi.
Nigeria’s Super Falcons have reportedly experienced an unsettling incident ahead of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after several players said cash went missing from their hotel rooms in Morocco.
According to reports, multiple members of the squad discovered that money had disappeared from their belongings while they were away from their rooms.
Forward Esther Okoronkwo said she lost $700, the highest amount among the affected players. Team captain Rasheedat Ajibade reportedly had $200 missing, while defender Osinachi Ohale and midfielder Halimatu Ayinde each reported losing $100. Joy Omewa also said $120 was taken, bringing the reported total to $1,220.
Okoronkwo publicly addressed the incident on Snapchat, expressing frustration over how the matter was handled after the players raised their concerns.
“We started talking to them but they don’t have any respect,” she wrote.
Some reports have alleged that members of the hotel’s housekeeping staff may have been involved. However, no official findings have been released, and the claims have not been independently confirmed.
As of publication, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the Marriott Hotel Casablanca had not issued official statements confirming the incident or announcing the outcome of any investigation.
Despite the reported setback, the Super Falcons remain focused on their campaign at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. Justin Madugu’s side opens its Group C schedule against Malawi before facing Zambia and Egypt as Nigeria bids to win another continental title.
The Super Falcons will hope to put the off-field distraction behind them and concentrate on their quest for success at WAFCON 2026, where they are among the favourites to lift the trophy once again.
