From 6-0 thrashings to penalty shootout drama, Nigeria have largely had the upper hand in 10 previous knockout meetings with Cameroon.
The Super Falcons will renew one of African women’s football’s most familiar rivalries when Nigeria face Cameroon in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on Sunday.
The defending champions booked their place in the last eight after recovering from an opening-day setback against Malawi and then producing a commanding 6-2 victory over Egypt in their final Group C fixture.
Cameroon, meanwhile, topped Group D to set up another knockout meeting with Nigeria.
The two nations have a long history at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, particularly in the latter stages of the competition. Before their 2026 quarter-final in Morocco, Nigeria and Cameroon had already met 10 times in WAFCON knockout matches.
And the record is overwhelmingly in Nigeria’s favour.
The Super Falcons have won eight of those encounters in regulation or extra time, while one was settled by penalties after a draw. Cameroon’s only knockout victory over Nigeria came in the 2012 third-place match.

1. Nigeria 6-0 Cameroon — WAFCON 1998 Semi-final
The first of the 10 knockout meetings came at the 1998 tournament in Nigeria.
The Super Falcons produced a spectacular performance in the semi-final, dismantling Cameroon 6-0 to reach the final.
Nigeria went on to defeat Ghana 2-0 in the final and claim their first WAFCON title. The 1998 campaign remains one of the most dominant tournament performances in the competition’s history, with Nigeria scoring 28 goals.
2. Nigeria 5-0 Cameroon — WAFCON 2004 Final
Six years later, the two sides met again, this time with the continental title at stake.
Cameroon had already pushed Nigeria to a 2-2 draw during the group stage, but the final was a completely different story.
The Super Falcons ran riot, winning 5-0 to lift another African title.
Perpetua Nkwocha was the star of the show, scoring four goals, while Vera Okolo added another as Nigeria secured one of their biggest WAFCON final victories.

The rivalry continued at the 2006 tournament in Nigeria.
Cameroon reached the semi-finals, but Nigeria once again proved too strong, recording another 5-0 victory.
The Super Falcons subsequently defeated Ghana 1-0 in the final to retain the trophy.
4. Nigeria 1-1 Cameroon — WAFCON 2008 Third-place Match
The 2008 meeting was considerably tighter.
After both sides failed to settle the third-place contest inside 90 minutes, the match ended 1-1 and went to penalties.
Nigeria eventually prevailed 4-3 on spot-kicks to claim the bronze medal.
5. Nigeria 5-1 Cameroon — WAFCON 2010 Semi-final
Two years later, the Super Falcons returned to winning ways in emphatic fashion.
Nigeria defeated Cameroon 5-1 in the 2010 semi-final in South Africa, booking their place in the final.
The Super Falcons then defeated Equatorial Guinea 4-2 to reclaim the continental crown. The 2010 semi-final scoreline remains one of Nigeria’s biggest knockout wins over Cameroon.
6. Cameroon 1-0 Nigeria — WAFCON 2012 Third-place Match
Cameroon finally ended Nigeria’s long unbeaten run in their WAFCON knockout rivalry in 2012.
After Nigeria lost to South Africa in the semi-finals, the Super Falcons faced Cameroon in the third-place match.
The Indomitable Lionesses won 1-0, handing Nigeria their first knockout defeat against Cameroon in the competition.
It remains Cameroon’s only victory over Nigeria in a WAFCON knockout match.
7. Nigeria 2-0 Cameroon — WAFCON 2014 Final
The two rivals met again in a WAFCON final in 2014.
Nigeria produced another strong performance to defeat Cameroon 2-0 and reclaim the African title.
The result continued the Super Falcons’ impressive record against the Lionesses when the trophy was on the line.
8. Nigeria 1-0 Cameroon — WAFCON 2016 Final
The rivalry reached another final two years later, with Cameroon hosting the tournament.
The Indomitable Lionesses had enjoyed an impressive run to the final and were chasing their first WAFCON title.
But Nigeria spoiled the party.
The Super Falcons secured a narrow 1-0 victory, with Desire Oparanozie scoring the decisive late goal to give Nigeria another continental crown.
9. Nigeria 0-0 Cameroon — WAFCON 2018 Semi-final
The 2018 semi-final produced another tense encounter.
Neither side could break the deadlock during regulation time or extra time, forcing the match into a penalty shootout.
Nigeria held their nerve to win 4-2 on penalties and advance to the final, where they eventually defeated South Africa on penalties to retain the trophy.
10. Nigeria 1-0 Cameroon — WAFCON 2022 Quarter-final
The most recent knockout meeting came at the 2022 tournament in Morocco.
This time, the teams met in the quarter-finals, with a place in the last four and a route towards World Cup qualification at stake.
The match was closely contested, but Rasheedat Ajibade scored the decisive goal as Nigeria secured a 1-0 victory.
The Super Falcons advanced to the semi-finals before eventually losing to hosts Morocco on penalties.

Sunday’s quarter-final carries significance beyond a place in the WAFCON semi-finals.
The 2026 tournament also serves as a route to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil. The four quarter-final winners will secure automatic qualification for the World Cup.
