Victor Osimhen is reportedly on course to become the new captain of Galatasaray after the departure of Mauro Icardi, with Turkish reports identifying the Nigerian striker as the leading candidate to inherit the club’s armband.

Galatasaray recently confirmed that Icardi has left the Turkish champions after his contract expired, ending an impressive four-year spell in Istanbul. During his time at the club, the Argentine forward helped Galatasaray secure four Turkish Super Lig titles and established himself as one of the team’s most respected leaders. While the club has yet to officially announce its next captain, reports in Turkey indicate that Osimhen is the frontrunner for the role.

Since arriving from Napoli in 2025, the Super Eagles striker has become one of Galatasaray’s standout performers. His impact has gone beyond scoring goals, as he has played a significant role in helping the club win consecutive Turkish Super Lig titles, lift the Turkish Cup and compete strongly in the UEFA Champions League.

Osimhen has also rewritten parts of the club’s history. He became the quickest player to reach the 50-goal mark for Galatasaray and made history as the first foreign player to score a UEFA Champions League hat-trick for the Turkish giants, achieving the feat against Ajax.

The Nigerian international also demonstrated his leadership qualities throughout last season. Serving as assistant captain under head coach Okan Buruk, Osimhen returned from injury to inspire Galatasaray’s crucial derby victory over Fenerbahce before scoring twice against Antalyaspor as the club wrapped up a record-extending 26th Turkish Super Lig title. His consistent contributions in both domestic and European competitions saw him finish among the team’s leading scorers for the campaign.

With his growing influence on and off the pitch, Osimhen is widely regarded by supporters and the club’s hierarchy as the natural successor to Icardi. Having already worn the captain’s armband in the Argentine’s absence, the 26-year-old has earned a reputation as one of the dressing room’s key leaders.

Should Galatasaray officially hand him the captaincy, it would represent another landmark achievement in Osimhen’s career. The Super Eagles star would become one of the few Nigerian footballers to captain one of Europe’s most successful clubs, further strengthening his legacy at Galatasaray.
