Top football stakeholders present as Nigeria’s second-tier playoff begins.

Top Nigerian football stakeholders, including former Sports Minister Sunday Dare and Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle, were in attendance as the 2026 Nigeria National League (NNL) Super Four kicked off in Ikenne, Ogun State, with Sporting Lagos and Doma United recording opening victories.
The highly anticipated tournament, which determines the overall champion of Nigeria’s second-tier league, began at the Remo Stars Stadium with strong performances from the participating teams.
Sporting Lagos Edge Ranchers Bees
Sporting Lagos made a winning start to their Super Four campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Ranchers Bees in the tournament opener.
The Lagos-based club dominated large spells of the encounter but had to wait until the 40th minute to find the breakthrough. A well-worked move saw Shola Oladunjoye combine effectively with Seun Akanji, whose pinpoint cross was met by Alex Leme, who powered home a decisive header.
Despite pressure from Ranchers Bees in the second half, Sporting Lagos remained compact defensively to secure all three points and set the pace early in the competition.
Akanji’s influential display earned him the Man of the Match award after providing the assist and posing a constant attacking threat.
Doma United Also Start Strong
In the second fixture of the day, Doma United also recorded a narrow victory to kick off their Super Four journey on a positive note, underlining their strong form heading into the tournament.
The Northern side, who were among the most consistent teams during the regular NNL season, showed resilience and tactical discipline to secure maximum points in their opening match.

Among those present were Sunday Dare, NNL Chairman George Aluo, Nigeria Football Federation board member Ganiyu Majekodunmi, and former international Felix Owolabi.
Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle and his assistant were also spotted at the venue, highlighting the importance of the competition in identifying talent for the national team.
