Teenager continues her remarkable rise after Commonwealth Games silver as Nigeria celebrates a historic field event triumph at the World Athletics U20 Championships.
Nigeria’s athletics contingent celebrated another landmark achievement after Jessica Oji became the first Nigerian athlete to win a field event gold medal at the World Athletics U20 Championships, producing a brilliant display in the women’s shot put final in Eugene, Oregon, United States.
The 19-year-old delivered a winning throw of 18.08 metres, edging Ecuador’s Belsy Jenniffer Quiñonez, who claimed silver with 17.90m, while Germany’s Emily Scherf secured bronze after throwing 17.23m.
The victory marks another major milestone in what has been an outstanding few weeks for the teenage sensation, who only recently won silver at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow while representing Nigeria for the first time at a major senior international championship.
Oji Dominates Shot Put Final
Oji wasted no time stamping her authority on the competition.
She opened the final with an impressive 18.05m throw before improving to her championship-winning mark of 18.08m on her second attempt.
Her consistency was equally remarkable, recording further efforts of 17.95m and 18.07m, all of which would have comfortably secured the gold medal ahead of the rest of the field.
The performance underlined her growing reputation as one of the brightest young talents in global athletics and reinforced Nigeria’s emergence in an event where the country has traditionally enjoyed little success.
A Rapid Rise Since Switching Allegiance
The historic triumph comes just months after Oji officially switched her sporting allegiance from the United States to Nigeria in February.
Since making the decision, the teenager has enjoyed an impressive start in Nigerian colours.
She celebrated her 19th birthday while in Team Nigeria’s training camp in Aberdeen ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, where she announced herself on the international stage with a silver medal after throwing 17.87m.
Now, by breaking through the prestigious 18-metre mark as a junior athlete, Oji has strengthened hopes that Nigeria has unearthed a future world-class shot put star capable of competing consistently among the global elite.
Speaking during the Commonwealth Games, Oji explained why representing Nigeria meant so much to her.
“If I don’t compete for Nigeria, where else? I love the vibes and the atmosphere around the Nigerian camp. I will go to the World U20 Championships and give my best.”
She has now delivered on that promise in spectacular fashion.
Historic Achievement for Nigerian Athletics
Oji’s gold medal is another landmark moment in Nigerian athletics history.
Before her victory in Eugene, Nigeria’s best-ever field event finishes at the World Athletics U20 Championships were:
- Esther Aghatise’s silver medal in the women’s long jump in 2002.
- Chinecherem Nnamdi’s bronze medal in the men’s javelin in 2021.
Her success therefore represents Nigeria’s first-ever World U20 title in a field event, further expanding the country’s growing reputation beyond sprinting events.
Team Nigeria Continues Strong Showing
Nigeria’s impressive campaign in Eugene extended beyond Oji’s historic victory.
The country’s mixed 4x100m relay team of Tejiri Godwin, Rosemary Nwankwo, Perfect Faye and Miracle Ezechukwu produced one of the standout performances of the championships.
The quartet clocked 41.91 seconds to finish second in their heat and qualify for the final.
Their performance established a new Nigerian U20 record and also became the fastest U20 time ever recorded by an African team in the mixed 4x100m relay.
Anchor runner Miracle Ezechukwu delivered a stunning closing leg, surging past Germany before almost catching the United States at the finish.
Nigeria also celebrated further progress in the women’s 400 metres, with Jecinta Lawrence and Faith Ezechukwu both securing qualification for the semi-finals after finishing strongly in their respective heats.
Meanwhile, Precious Opinion produced a personal best of 16.02m in the men’s triple jump qualification to book his place in the next round.
With several athletes still competing, Team Nigeria remains firmly in contention for more medals as the World Athletics U20 Championships continue in Eugene.
