Isaac James has earned his first Super Eagles call-up after impressing with Portuguese club Alverca.
The 22-year-old defender was included in Eric Chelle’s 24-man squad for Nigeria’s opening Africa Cup of Nations 2027 qualifying matches.
Nigeria will host Madagascar in Uyo on September 25 before travelling to Guinea-Bissau for the second fixture four days later.
James has enjoyed a positive start to the 2026/27 Primeira Liga campaign, featuring regularly for Alverca and contributing two assists in his opening six league appearances.
His ability to operate on the left side of the defence has also made him an option for Chelle as the coach continues to assess his squad.
James has spent the early part of his professional career in Europe, developing in France before moving to Portugal and establishing himself with Alverca.
He made 19 league appearances for the Portuguese club during the 2025/26 season and has continued to feature prominently this term.
Three newcomers get their Super Eagles chance
James is one of three players receiving their first senior Super Eagles invitation for the September qualifiers. Goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo and forward George Ilenikhena have also been handed maiden call-ups by Chelle.
Okonkwo joins the goalkeeping group alongside the returning Stanley Nwabali and Maduka Okoye. Nwabali’s return gives Chelle another experienced option between the posts, while Okonkwo will have the opportunity to make his case within the senior setup.
In defence, James provides a fresh option as Chelle considers his choices on the left side. The Alverca defender’s versatility and regular playing time in Portugal have helped earn him a place in the squad, while the return of Ola Aina further strengthens Nigeria’s defensive options.
Ilenikhena, meanwhile, adds another young attacking option to a squad that already features established forwards such as Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Samuel Chukwueze and Moses Simon.
For James, the September camp could mark the beginning of his senior international career. After progressing through football in Nigeria and Europe, the Alverca defender now has an opportunity to compete for his first Super Eagles appearance.
Whether he makes his debut against Madagascar or Guinea-Bissau will ultimately depend on Chelle’s selection, but his inclusion represents another significant step in the young defender’s development.
