Newly eligible Nigeria goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has expressed his excitement at the prospect of finally representing the Super Eagles after completing his international switch from England to Nigeria.
The 24-year-old goalkeeper, who currently plays for Wrexham, recently received FIFA approval to switch his international allegiance, officially clearing the way for him to feature for Nigeria at senior level.
Speaking about the opportunity to represent the Super Eagles, Okonkwo admitted his eagerness to finally wear the green and white jersey.
Born in Camden, London to Nigerian parents, Okonkwo previously represented England at youth level during his time in Arsenal’s academy before deciding to commit his international future to Nigeria.
The highly-rated goalkeeper developed through Arsenal’s youth system before gaining valuable senior experience during loan spells at Crewe Alexandra, Sturm Graz and Wrexham, where his performances have significantly boosted his reputation in recent seasons.
Reports suggest Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle is eager to integrate the goalkeeper into the national team setup ahead of the upcoming Unity Cup and international friendlies against Portugal and Poland.
Nigeria’s goalkeeping department has remained one of the most debated areas of the squad in recent years despite the emergence of Stanley Nwabali as first choice. The addition of Okonkwo is expected to increase competition alongside Maduka Okoye, Francis Uzoho and other goalkeeping options.
Standing at nearly two metres tall, Okonkwo is admired for his reflexes, composure on the ball and commanding presence inside the penalty area — qualities modern coaches increasingly demand from elite goalkeepers.
For many Nigerian football followers, securing the commitment of another highly-rated diaspora talent represents a positive step as the Super Eagles continue building a younger and more competitive squad for future international tournaments.
With his paperwork now completed and his enthusiasm obvious, Arthur Okonkwo’s long-awaited Super Eagles debut could finally arrive in the coming weeks.
