Nigeria must reshuffle its squad after Oluwatosin Demehin and Jennifer Echegini receive automatic suspensions.
Nigeria’s preparations for their decisive Group C encounter against Egypt have been dealt a significant setback after defenders and midfielders Oluwatosin Demehin and Jennifer Echegini were ruled out through suspension following the Super Falcons’ victory over Zambia at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
The disciplinary sanctions mean head coach Justin Madugu will be without two regular first-team players as the Super Falcons look to secure progression to the knockout phase of the competition.
Demehin was sent off during the first half of Nigeria’s 1-0 win over Zambia after being adjudged to have denied Zambia captain Barbra Banda a clear goalscoring opportunity. The dismissal forced the nine-time African champions to play with 10 players for the remainder of the contest, but they held on for an important victory through a disciplined defensive display.
Echegini will also sit out the Egypt fixture after picking up her second yellow card of the tournament. Under CAF’s competition regulations, two cautions in separate matches result in an automatic one-match suspension.
The absence of both players leaves Madugu with important selection decisions in defence and midfield ahead of one of Nigeria’s biggest matches of the group stage.
Shukurat Oladipo is among the options available to replace Demehin in central defence and could partner experienced defender Osinachi Ohale. Another possibility is moving Christy Ucheibe into the back line, a tactical adjustment Nigeria successfully used after Demehin’s dismissal against Zambia.
In midfield, Halimatu Ayinde offers experience and defensive stability, while Toni Payne could provide creativity in a more advanced role. Omorinsola Babajide is another option capable of adding pace and attacking threat if the coaching crew opts for a more offensive approach.
Meanwhile, defender Michelle Alozie also made headlines after the Zambia match when she underwent a routine post-match anti-doping test following her Player of the Match performance.
The Chicago Stars defender produced an outstanding display, completing the full match while switching from right-back to left-back after Nigeria went down to 10 players. Her interceptions, tackles and defensive awareness played a major role in preserving the Super Falcons’ narrow advantage.
Speaking after the mandatory anti-doping procedure, Alozie chose to focus on the team’s collective effort rather than her individual recognition, describing the victory as the result of determination from the entire squad.
With qualification still on the line and two influential players unavailable, the Super Falcons will now rely on the depth of their squad as they prepare for a crucial meeting with Egypt.
