Udinese shot-stopper relieved after court dismisses long-running investigation in Italy.

Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has been cleared of wrongdoing after an Italian court officially dropped the betting-related fraud investigation involving the Udinese shot-stopper.
The decision brings an end to months of uncertainty surrounding the Nigerian international, who had been under investigation in Italy over alleged irregular betting activities linked to a Serie A match.
According to reports from Italy, the case was closed during a pre-trial hearing in Udine after betting operator Snaitech withdrew its complaint against the 26-year-old goalkeeper. Judge Paolo Lauteri subsequently ruled that there was no case to answer, effectively terminating the proceedings.
The investigation had cast a shadow over Okoye’s season with Udinese despite his impressive performances in Serie A. Earlier in the campaign, the former Watford goalkeeper missed six league matches while the investigation was ongoing, including fixtures against Inter Milan and AC Milan.
The allegations stemmed from suspicious betting activity connected to a Serie A clash between Udinese and Lazio in March 2024, where Okoye received a yellow card for time-wasting. Italian authorities had initially examined whether there was any connection between the booking and unusual betting patterns recorded in the Udine region.
However, the latest ruling by the Italian court has now cleared the Super Eagles goalkeeper of betting fraud allegations, handing both the player and Udinese a significant boost ahead of the final stretch of the season.
Okoye has remained an important figure for Udinese since returning to action, registering several clean sheets and producing strong performances in Italy’s top flight. His form has also strengthened his position within the Nigeria national team setup as the Super Eagles continue preparations for upcoming international competitions.
The development is expected to come as welcome news for Nigerian football fans, many of whom had closely followed the case amid concerns over the goalkeeper’s future in European football.
With the legal uncertainty now resolved, Okoye can fully concentrate on his football career as Udinese continue their Serie A campaign and Nigeria look ahead to crucial international fixtures later this year.
