Super Eagles defender Semi Ajayi and his Hull City teammates have been handed a dramatic change of opponents ahead of the 2026 EFL Championship play-off final following Southampton’s shock expulsion from the competition.
Hull City will now face Middlesbrough at Wembley after Southampton were removed from the play-offs by an independent disciplinary commission over breaches of EFL regulations involving allegations of spying on opposition training sessions.
The controversy erupted after Middlesbrough accused Southampton of illegally observing their training sessions before the Championship semi-final clash between both clubs. Reports later emerged showing a Southampton analyst near Middlesbrough’s training ground, prompting an official investigation by the English Football League.
Despite Southampton initially defeating Middlesbrough over two legs to qualify for the final, the disciplinary commission overturned the result after the club admitted to multiple breaches of league regulations. Southampton were also handed a four-point deduction for the 2026/27 Championship season.
For Semi Ajayi, the decision presents another huge opportunity as Hull City move within one match of securing promotion to the English Premier League.
The experienced Nigerian defender joined Hull City in 2025 after leaving West Bromwich Albion and has become one of the club’s important defensive figures despite battling injury setbacks during the campaign.
Ajayi only recently returned from the hamstring injury he suffered while representing Nigeria at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where he impressed for the Super Eagles during their run to a third-place finish.
Hull City booked their place in the Wembley final after defeating Millwall 2-0 across two legs in the semi-finals, with Ajayi featuring prominently during the decisive second leg victory.
The Championship play-off final is widely regarded as one of the richest matches in world football because of the enormous financial rewards attached to Premier League promotion, with estimates placing the value at over £200 million.
Now, all attention turns to Wembley, where Semi Ajayi and Hull City will attempt to complete their promotion dream and potentially return the Nigerian defender to the Premier League next season.
