Nigeria’s four continental representatives are assured financial support under CAF’s new solidarity payment scheme.
Nigeria’s four representatives in the 2026/27 CAF inter-club competitions are set to receive a major financial boost after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) introduced an enhanced solidarity payment for clubs eliminated during the preliminary rounds.
Under the new policy announced by CAF, every club knocked out in the qualifying stages of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup will receive $100,000 in solidarity funding. At current exchange rates, the amount is approximately ₦136 million for each club.
The development guarantees financial support for Enugu Rangers, Rivers United, Shooting Stars (3SC) and El-Kanemi Warriors, Nigeria’s four representatives in this season’s continental competitions, regardless of whether they progress beyond the opening rounds.
CAF Doubles Support for Eliminated Clubs
The announcement comes ahead of the preliminary round draws scheduled to take place at CAF headquarters in Cairo, Egypt.
The governing body introduced a similar initiative in 2024 by awarding $50,000 to clubs eliminated in the preliminary stages. The latest decision doubles that figure to $100,000, reflecting CAF’s continued efforts to strengthen club football across the continent and ease the financial burden on participating teams.
In previous seasons, clubs that exited early often returned home with significant travel and logistical expenses but little financial compensation. The revised solidarity payment is expected to provide greater financial stability for participating clubs.
What It Means for Nigeria’s Representatives
Nigeria will be represented by four clubs across CAF’s two flagship club competitions.
Enugu Rangers secured a place in the CAF Champions League after winning the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title, while Rivers United qualified as league runners-up.
In the CAF Confederation Cup, Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) earned qualification through their third-place finish in the NPFL, while El-Kanemi Warriors booked their ticket by winning the President Federation Cup.
Although each club will be targeting a place in the lucrative group stage, the new CAF policy guarantees a financial return even if their continental campaign ends during the qualification rounds.
For clubs operating with limited budgets, the additional funding could help cover travel costs, player welfare, logistics and other operational expenses associated with competing across Africa.
Bigger Prize Money Still Available
Beyond the solidarity payment, CAF has maintained the increased prize money available to clubs that advance deep into both competitions.
The winners of the CAF Champions League will earn $6 million, while the champions of the CAF Confederation Cup will receive $4 million.
The improved financial structure is part of CAF’s broader strategy to enhance the competitiveness and commercial appeal of African club football.
For Rangers, Rivers United, Shooting Stars and El-Kanemi Warriors, attention now turns to the preliminary round draws. However, whatever the outcome, each Nigerian club can begin its continental campaign knowing a guaranteed financial package awaits if its journey ends at the qualification stage.
