Simba SC and Kaizer Chiefs ready to battle for Nigerian goalkeeper

Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali could finally be closing in on a return to club football, with two African heavyweights emerging as frontrunners for his signature ahead of the summer transfer window.

The 29-year-old shot-stopper has been without a club since leaving Chippa United in February, a move that has left one of Nigeria’s top goalkeepers in an unusual period of uncertainty.

Simba, Chiefs lead the race

According to multiple reports, Tanzanian giants Simba SC and South African powerhouse Kaizer Chiefs are closely monitoring Nwabali’s situation and are expected to step up their interest once the current season concludes.

Both clubs see the Nigerian international as a valuable opportunity in the transfer market, especially given his free-agent status, which means he can be signed without a transfer fee.

Simba, regular contenders in the CAF Champions League, are keen to strengthen their squad with an experienced goalkeeper, while Kaizer Chiefs are looking to rebuild and add quality to key positions.

From AFCON hero to free agent

Nwabali rose to prominence after his impressive performances for Nigeria at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where he kept multiple clean sheets and played a key role in the Super Eagles’ run to the final.

He has since remained a regular in the national team setup, even helping Nigeria secure a bronze medal at AFCON 2025 and earning over 30 caps.

Despite attracting interest from clubs in Europe and the Middle East—including reported links to Queens Park Rangers and Al-Ettifaq—no deal materialised, leaving the goalkeeper in limbo.

Why the delay?

The delay in Nwabali securing a new club is believed to be largely due to timing, with many leagues nearing the end of their seasons. Clubs are expected to intensify negotiations once the transfer window officially opens.

His availability, however, has made him one of the most attractive free agents in African football, with clubs eager to secure an experienced international goalkeeper without a transfer fee.

Crucial decision ahead

For Nwabali, the next move could define the next phase of his career. At 29, securing regular playing time at a competitive club will be vital—not only for his club ambitions but also for maintaining his place in the Super Eagles squad.

With competition for Nigeria’s number one spot intensifying, a strong return to club football could be key to reclaiming his status as first-choice goalkeeper. The Super Eagles goalkeeper is too valuable to remain without a club for long.
