Super hurdler delivers Team Nigeria’s first gold medal with commanding display in Accra.

Nigeria’s athletics queen Tobi Amusan delivered another outstanding performance on Wednesday night after winning Team Nigeria’s first gold medal at the ongoing 2026 African Senior Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana.

The world record holder stormed to victory in the women’s 100m hurdles final with a time of 12.83 seconds at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, reaffirming her status as Africa’s dominant sprint hurdler.

Amusan’s latest triumph marked her third consecutive African Championships title in the women’s 100m hurdles following earlier victories in Asaba in 2018 and Mauritius in 2022.

The Nigerian star once again showed her class from the start of the race, producing a clean and explosive performance to comfortably finish ahead of her continental rivals in front of an excited crowd in Accra. Zimbabwe’s Ashley Miller and fellow Nigerian Adaobi Tabugbo completed the podium places after finishing second and third respectively.

Amusan’s victory handed Nigeria its first gold medal of the championships and boosted Team Nigeria’s growing medal haul at the continental competition.

The 29-year-old remains one of the biggest names in African athletics following her historic achievements over the past few years, including winning the women’s 100m hurdles world title and setting a world record time of 12.12 seconds in 2022.

Beyond the gold medal, Amusan’s performance also served as a strong statement ahead of upcoming international athletics competitions later this season. The Nigerian hurdler has continued to show consistency at the highest level despite fierce competition on the global stage.

Team Nigeria also enjoyed a productive outing on Day Two of the championships, with additional medals arriving in other track and field events to strengthen the country’s position on the medals table.

Speaking after the race, Amusan reportedly encouraged younger athletes to remain focused on their dreams and not allow criticism or setbacks to stop their ambitions in athletics.

Nigerian sports fans will now hope the country’s athletes can maintain their impressive performances as the African Athletics Championships continue in Ghana over the coming days.
