Coach opens door for dual-national players and home-based talents

Super Eagles head coach Éric Chelle has confirmed plans to expand Nigeria’s player pool by inviting dual-national players and standout Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) stars ahead of the 2026 Unity Cup in London.

The Franco-Malian tactician revealed that the invitational tournament will serve as a testing ground for new and fringe players as he continues to rebuild the national team.

Chelle to “comb Europe” for new Nigerian talents

Chelle disclosed that he will actively scout Europe for players of Nigerian descent who are yet to commit their international future to the Super Eagles.

“The Unity Cup provides a platform to assess new players. I will comb Europe and invite new players of Nigerian descent,” Chelle said.

The move is part of a broader strategy to strengthen squad depth by tapping into Nigeria’s vast diaspora talent pool, a method that has already seen several foreign-born players commit to the national team in recent years.

NPFL stars to get fresh Super Eagles opportunity

In a significant boost for domestic football, Chelle also confirmed that top performers in the NPFL will be closely monitored and given a chance to impress.

The coach stated that he will attend league matches and assess players before finalising his squad, ensuring that in-form domestic talents are not overlooked.

This development comes amid growing calls from stakeholders and former internationals for greater inclusion of home-based players in the national team setup.

Unity Cup to serve as testing ground

The 2026 Unity Cup, scheduled to take place in London from May 26 to 30, will feature Nigeria, Jamaica, India and Zimbabwe.

Unlike FIFA-sanctioned international windows, the tournament provides flexibility for experimentation, allowing coaches to test new players and tactical systems.

Nigeria will head into the competition as defending champions, having won the previous edition in 2025.

Balance between new faces and established stars

While new and fringe players are expected to feature prominently in the Unity Cup, Chelle confirmed that established stars will return for high-profile international friendlies later in June.

According to the coach, matches against top European opposition will require his strongest squad, particularly as Nigeria aims to improve its global ranking.

What this means for Nigerian football

Chelle’s approach signals a deliberate effort to build a more competitive and inclusive Super Eagles squad by blending domestic talent, diaspora players, and established internationals.

For NPFL players, the Unity Cup presents a rare opportunity to stake a claim for regular inclusion, while dual-national prospects could finally be integrated into the national team setup.
