A fiery exchange between Osimhen and Mouriño added controversy to Galatasaray’s final pre-season outing.
Victor Osimhen was on target for Galatasaray but found himself at the centre of a heated confrontation during their 2-1 pre-season defeat to Villarreal at Rams Park on Saturday.
The Super Eagles striker produced an instant response after Villarreal took an early lead, but the friendly later turned feisty when Osimhen clashed with Spanish defender Santiago Mouriño.
Osimhen strikes back quickly
Villarreal needed just three minutes to break the deadlock through Ayoze Pérez, giving the visitors an early advantage in Istanbul.
Galatasaray, however, responded almost immediately.
Two minutes after Pérez’s opener, Osimhen pounced on a defensive mistake to level the contest and give the home supporters something to celebrate.
The goal continued the Nigerian forward’s impressive involvement in Galatasaray’s preparations ahead of the new season.
But the match took a more heated turn before half-time.
Osimhen and Mouriño clash
The flashpoint occurred in the 37th minute as Galatasaray attempted to build an attack down the right side.
Following an exchange between Osimhen and Mouriño, the Nigerian striker moved towards the Villarreal defender and pushed him, sending the centre-back to the ground.
Mouriño got back to his feet and the two players continued their confrontation before ending up in a head-to-head exchange.
The incident quickly became one of the major talking points from the encounter, adding tension to what had otherwise been a competitive pre-season fixture.
Villarreal have the final say
Galatasaray’s frustration increased four minutes after the confrontation when Villarreal restored their lead.
Georges Mikautadze found the net in the 41st minute to put the Spanish side 2-1 ahead going into the break.
Galatasaray were unable to find another equaliser after the interval, allowing Villarreal to hold on for a victory at Rams Park.
For Osimhen, the night produced mixed emotions. The Nigerian striker found the net and showed his attacking threat, but his confrontation with Mouriño overshadowed much of the discussion surrounding the match.
The forward will now turn his attention to the start of the competitive campaign as Galatasaray prepare for another demanding season in Turkey.
