Nigerian-born teenager Josh Ajala marked his first senior start for West Ham United with two goals as the Hammers came from behind to defeat Southampton 4-1 in the Carabao Cup.
The 19-year-old was handed a starting role by manager Nuno Espírito Santo at St Mary’s Stadium and responded with a standout performance as West Ham booked their place in the third round.
Southampton made the stronger start and took the lead after 10 minutes through Léo Scienza.
West Ham struggled to create clear openings early on, but Ajala changed the game shortly before half-time.
The teenager rose to meet Lewis Orford’s corner and headed the ball into the net in the 41st minute to bring West Ham level.
Ajala then completed the turnaround eight minutes after the restart.
After Southampton failed to deal with the ball inside their penalty area, the young forward reacted quickly and fired past goalkeeper Daniel Peretz to put West Ham 2-1 ahead in the 53rd minute.
The Hammers strengthened their advantage in the closing stages when substitute Taty Castellanos scored in the 75th minute.
Jarrod Bowen, another second-half substitute, completed the scoring six minutes from full-time as West Ham sealed an emphatic 4-1 victory.
Ajala makes strong impression
Ajala’s performance represents an important moment in his development at West Ham.
Having previously featured as a substitute, the 19-year-old was given his first senior start and immediately made his presence felt with a brace.
