The National Sports Commission backs Nigeria’s young basketball stars after their hard-fought semi-final victory.
The National Sports Commission (NSC) has congratulated Nigeria’s Junior D’Tigress after the U18 women’s basketball team secured qualification for the 2027 FIBA U19 Women’s Basketball World Cup in China.
Nigeria booked its place at the global tournament with a hard-fought 53-50 victory over hosts Côte d’Ivoire in the semi-final of the 2026 FIBA U18 Women’s AfroBasket in Abidjan. The top two teams at the continental tournament earn qualification for the following year’s U19 World Cup.
The victory also means the Junior D’Tigress will have an opportunity to compete for the African title when they face Mali in the final.
Junior D’Tigress overcome hosts in tense semi-final
Nigeria had to withstand a strong challenge from the host nation before securing the three-point victory.
The 53-50 result was enough to take the Junior D’Tigress through to the final and, more importantly, guarantee their place at the 2027 FIBA U19 Women’s Basketball World Cup.
For a young Nigerian team competing on the continental stage, the achievement represents another positive step in the country’s women’s basketball development pathway.
The 2026 FIBA U18 Women’s AfroBasket is being staged in Abidjan and features Africa’s leading youth women’s basketball teams. FIBA confirmed before the tournament that the winner and runner-up would earn Africa’s two available places at the 2027 U19 World Cup.
Olopade praises Nigeria’s young basketball stars
NSC Director-General Bukola Olopade praised the players for their determination and composure during the difficult semi-final.
Olopade said qualifying for the World Cup demonstrated the team’s commitment and discipline, while challenging the players to complete their campaign by winning the African championship.
The NSC boss also commended the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) and its president, Musa Kida, for what he described as the progress being made by Nigeria’s national basketball teams, particularly the women’s teams.
The commission’s backing comes at an important stage of the Junior D’Tigress’ development, with the team now having a major international tournament to prepare for after the conclusion of the African championship.
NSC promises World Cup preparations
Olopade also assured the Junior D’Tigress and the NBBF that the National Sports Commission would support the team’s preparations for the 2027 World Cup.
The objective, according to the NSC, is to ensure the young Nigerians receive the necessary preparation ahead of their campaign in China.
That support could prove important as the players move from continental competition to a global stage featuring some of the best young women’s basketball teams in the world.
FIBA describes its U19 World Cup competitions as an important development pathway, giving young players international experience and exposure before progressing towards senior national-team and professional basketball.
Another boost for Nigerian women’s basketball
The Junior D’Tigress’ qualification adds to a positive period for Nigerian women’s basketball.
The senior D’Tigress have also secured qualification for the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Germany, continuing Nigeria’s strong presence in international women’s basketball.
For the Junior D’Tigress, however, attention will first turn to the African final against Mali.
Mali enter the contest with an impressive record in the competition and are the defending champions, having won the 2024 edition. Nigeria finished as runners-up in that tournament.
World Cup ticket secured, African title now the target
With their 2027 FIBA U19 Women’s Basketball World Cup qualification already secured, Nigeria can approach the final with the opportunity to add another continental trophy.
