Former Heartland and Kano Pillars defender Chinedu Ozor suffered a medical emergency during Katsina United’s pre-season game against Niger Tornadoes in Katsina.
Nigerian football is mourning the death of Chinedu Ozor after the Katsina United defender suffered a medical emergency during a pre-season match against Niger Tornadoes in Katsina.
Ozor collapsed during the fixture at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium and was subsequently taken for medical attention. He was later pronounced dead, according to Katsina United and reports surrounding the incident.
The circumstances surrounding the defender’s death initially generated confusion after reports emerged that he had shown signs of movement after being taken to a mortuary.
Those reports prompted renewed hope among his family, teammates and supporters, with earlier accounts saying he had been returned to Katsina General Hospital for further medical attention.
However, Katsina United subsequently issued a clarification, stating that reports that Ozor had regained consciousness or “come back to life” were inaccurate.
According to the club, Ozor’s family requested further medical confirmation in the aftermath of the initial declaration of death. Katsina United said the situation should not be interpreted as evidence that the player had regained consciousness.
The club appealed to the public and media outlets to stop spreading the inaccurate account and allow Ozor’s family, teammates and the wider football community to mourn him.
Heartland mourns former defender
Ozor’s former club, Heartland FC, also paid tribute to the defender following news of his death.
Heartland described the player as someone who had given his best during his career and remembered him for the contribution he made while representing the Owerri-based club.
“Chinedu Ozor: You fought the good fight,” Heartland wrote in its tribute.
The Owerri club also said Ozor would be remembered for the memories he created during his time with the team.
Ozor’s Nigerian football career
Ozor built a career across several Nigerian professional clubs.
Available football records show that he represented Abia Warriors, Lobi Stars, Sunshine Stars, Katsina United, Heartland and Kano Pillars during his career.
His first recorded senior spells included Abia Warriors and Sunshine Stars before he moved to Lobi Stars. He later returned to the Nigerian league with Sunshine Stars and subsequently featured for Katsina United and Heartland.
Ozor spent the 2023/24 and 2024/25 campaigns with Heartland before moving to Kano Pillars for the 2025/26 season. He had also previously represented Katsina United.
His return to Katsina United came shortly before the tragedy, as the club prepared for the new Nigerian football season.
Questions over medical preparedness
Ozor’s death has also renewed discussion about the importance of adequate medical facilities and emergency response systems during football matches in Nigeria.
The incident comes after several previous cases of players and football officials suffering medical emergencies around Nigerian football grounds.
Katsina United’s clarification of the circumstances has also highlighted the importance of accurate reporting during sensitive medical situations, particularly when information is still developing.
For Ozor’s family, teammates, former clubs and friends, however, the focus is now on mourning a footballer whose career took him across several NPFL clubs.
Chinedu Ozor’s death has left Nigerian football with another painful reminder of the vulnerability of athletes during competition and the need for effective emergency medical support at sporting venues.
