Nigeria’s Flying Eagles are through to the final of the 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship after defeating hosts Côte d’Ivoire 4-3 in a dramatic penalty shootout following a 2-2 draw after extra time.
The semi-final clash at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium tested the resolve of Aliyu Zubairu’s side, who twice came from difficult situations before goalkeeper Lawani Clinton emerged as the match winner with two crucial saves during the shootout.
Côte d’Ivoire Make Bright Start
Backed by a passionate home crowd, Côte d’Ivoire controlled much of the opening exchanges and deservedly took the lead in the 18th minute through Namory Keita, who finished off a well-worked move after sustained pressure.
The hosts dominated possession and limited Nigeria’s attacking opportunities, forcing the Flying Eagles to head into the halftime break trailing 1-0.
Flying Eagles Fight Back
Nigeria returned with greater urgency after the restart and eventually found the breakthrough in the 68th minute.
Captain Habila Simeon rose highest to meet a long throw into the penalty area, powering a header beyond the Ivorian goalkeeper to level the contest at 1-1. The goal was particularly significant as it was the first conceded by Côte d’Ivoire throughout the tournament.
Neither side could find a winner during normal time, sending the encounter into extra time.
Extra-Time Drama
The Flying Eagles completed the turnaround shortly after the additional period began.
Forward Abubakar Aliyu nodded Nigeria into the lead with another well-directed header, giving the seven-time African champions hope of sealing a place in the final.
However, the hosts refused to surrender and capitalised on a defensive lapse to restore parity in the 104th minute, forcing the contest to penalties after the match ended 2-2.
Lawani Delivers in Shootout
The penalty shootout produced another twist when Nigeria’s captain, Habila Simeon, missed his spot-kick.
Fortunately for the Flying Eagles, goalkeeper Lawani Clinton stepped up with two outstanding saves to deny the Ivorians and inspire Nigeria to a 4-3 victory in the shootout.
His heroics secured the Flying Eagles’ place in the WAFU B U-20 Championship final and kept alive Nigeria’s hopes of successfully defending the regional title.
The victory also boosts the team’s confidence as they continue their preparations for future continental assignments, with another trophy now within touching distance.
