Super Eagles goalkeeper completes 90 minutes against Sunderland after missing Liverpool friendly.
Super Eagles goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has eased concerns over his future at Wrexham after returning to action in the club’s final pre-season fixture of its United States tour, featuring throughout a narrow 1-0 defeat to Sunderland at Subaru Park in Pennsylvania.
The 24-year-old’s absence from Wrexham’s previous friendly against Liverpool sparked widespread speculation that he could be heading for the exit door during the summer transfer window. However, his return to the starting line-up against Sunderland has helped quieten those reports, with no official indication from the club that the Nigerian goalkeeper is set to leave.
Okonkwo was kept busy during the contest and produced several important saves to deny Sunderland, including a sharp reflex stop after a deflected effort threatened to double the Premier League side’s advantage. Despite his efforts, Wrexham fell to a 1-0 defeat after Nordi Mukiele scored the game’s only goal in the 34th minute.
The Nigeria international also demonstrated his determination in the closing stages by joining his teammates in the opposition penalty area for a late corner as Wrexham searched unsuccessfully for an equaliser.
Okonkwo’s involvement suggests he remains an important figure in manager Phil Parkinson’s plans ahead of the new Championship campaign. Across pre-season, the former Arsenal academy goalkeeper started three of Wrexham’s five friendly matches and also featured off the bench against Wisła Kraków, highlighting the trust placed in him by the coaching staff.
The shot-stopper is entering the final year of his current contract with Wrexham after initially arriving on loan from Arsenal in 2023 before completing a permanent transfer the following season. While his long-term future may continue to attract attention, his latest appearance indicates he remains firmly in contention for the club’s first-team plans as preparations continue for the new season.
