Match-winning penalty save strengthens the goalkeeper’s status as Chippa United’s first-choice shot-stopper.
Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has earned glowing praise from Chippa United head coach Brandon Truter after playing a decisive role in the club’s triumph at the Eastern Cape Pre-Season Tournament in South Africa.
The Chilli Boys secured the title after defeating Highbury FC 4-2 in a penalty shootout, following a 1-1 draw in the final at Mthatha Stadium. Chippa United led before the interval, but their opponents responded in the second half to force penalties, where Nwabali proved to be the difference.
The Nigerian international produced an important save during the shootout, while his teammates converted their spot-kicks to secure the trophy. The victory marked Nwabali’s first penalty shootout success since returning to the club earlier this month.
Strong Return for the Super Eagles Goalkeeper
Nwabali has made an immediate impact since rejoining Chippa United after a five-month absence.
He kept a clean sheet in the club’s 1-0 semi-final victory over Ravens FC before delivering another assured performance in the final. Although he was beaten once during open play, his decisive penalty save helped Chippa United lift their first piece of silverware ahead of the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season.
Truter: Nwabali Is Among Africa’s Finest
Speaking after the victory, Truter highlighted the confidence he had in his goalkeeper once the match went to penalties.
“With Stanley Nwabali in goal, one of Africa’s best, I knew he’d make a save to help us win,” the Chippa United coach told The Herald.
The coach also praised the overall display of his squad throughout the competition, saying their performances had given him a welcome selection headache ahead of the new campaign.
Truter admitted his players controlled large portions of the final despite conceding an equaliser and expressed satisfaction with the team’s structure and discipline.
He also commended Highbury FC and coach Vusumuzi Vilakazi for providing strong competition, adding that he expects them to perform well during the upcoming season.
Positive Signs Ahead of the New Season
Nwabali’s impressive return is encouraging news for both Chippa United and the Super Eagles.
The 29-year-old resumed training with the South African club in July after taking time away following the tragic loss of his parents and grandmother within a short period.
Although he attracted transfer interest from Europe, no move materialised during the transfer window, leading him to continue his career with Chippa United.
His recent performances suggest he is firmly on course to reclaim his position as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper as they prepare to begin their Betway Premiership campaign against Golden Arrows.
