Reports suggest the France youth international has begun the process of securing Nigerian eligibility.
Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle could soon have another midfield option at his disposal, with reports suggesting Lesley Ugochukwu is exploring the possibility of representing Nigeria at senior international level.
The 22-year-old midfielder, who was born in France to Nigerian parents, previously represented France at youth level but has yet to earn a competitive senior cap for Les Bleus, leaving him eligible to switch his international allegiance under FIFA regulations if all requirements are met.
According to reports, the former Chelsea midfielder has begun the process of obtaining a Nigerian passport, an important step towards becoming eligible to represent the Super Eagles.
During the off-season, Ugochukwu was seen in Nigeria, where he spent time with family and was also spotted playing football alongside Super Eagles striker Kelechi Iheanacho in Owerri, further fuelling speculation about a potential international switch.
Should the paperwork be completed, the midfielder would still need FIFA approval before he can officially represent Nigeria in competitive matches.
A player with Ugochukwu’s qualities could provide added depth to Nigeria’s midfield options under Chelle. Comfortable in a defensive midfield role but equally capable of operating box-to-box, the French-born midfielder is known for his physical presence, composure in possession, ball progression and defensive work rate.
His arrival would increase competition for places in the Super Eagles midfield while offering another versatile option ahead of future international competitions.
Meanwhile, Ugochukwu is preparing for a new challenge at club level after completing a loan move from Burnley to Galatasaray, where he will be aiming to impress during the upcoming campaign.
