David Fizdale’s side records a third straight victory to book a place in the next round.

Nigeria’s senior men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, wrapped up an outstanding FIBA Basketball World Cup African Qualifiers window with a commanding 106-62 victory over Rwanda, securing a place in the next phase of the qualification campaign.

The convincing win marked Nigeria’s third consecutive victory during the qualifying window, following earlier successes against Tunisia and Guinea. The unbeaten run highlights the team’s growing confidence and improvement under head coach David Fizdale.

Point guard Uche (U.C.) Iroegbu once again played a pivotal role, finishing with 17 points and seven assists as he directed Nigeria’s offense with composure and creativity. Caleb Agada, Ikechukwu Mekowulu, and Stan Okoye each added 13 points in a well-balanced attacking display.

Nigeria established control from the opening quarter and maintained their dominance throughout the contest. Their relentless defense, fast-paced transition play, and efficient shooting left Rwanda with little opportunity to mount a comeback, resulting in one of D’Tigers’ most comprehensive victories in recent international competition.

The impressive performance capped a memorable qualifying window for Nigeria. D’Tigers began with an 84-81 win over Tunisia, where Chimezie Metu and Ike Iroegbu each scored 17 points, while Wes Iwundu contributed 14 and Uche Iroegbu added 13.

Nigeria followed that result with a dramatic 80-79 comeback victory against Guinea. Caleb Agada led the scoring with 22 points, while Uche Iroegbu added 14 points and Kaodirichi Akobundu-Ehiogu chipped in 10 as D’Tigers rallied from behind to secure another crucial victory.

Completing the qualifying window with three wins from three games represents a significant boost for Nigeria’s ambition of reaching the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup. The performances also reflect improved chemistry within the squad, with experienced campaigners and younger talents combining effectively on both ends of the court.

As preparations continue for the next round of the African qualifiers, Nigeria will be encouraged by the consistency, defensive discipline and offensive efficiency displayed throughout the competition. The perfect qualifying window has restored confidence in D’Tigers’ quest to return to the global basketball stage.
