Onuachu, Nwaiwu and Nwakaeme shine as Osimhen’s absence proves costly

Trabzonspor boosted their Turkish Süper Lig title ambitions with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Galatasaray, as a trio of Nigerian players combined to punish the league leaders in a high-stakes clash.
Heading into the encounter, just four points separated both sides at the top of the table, making it a defining fixture in the 2025/2026 title race. However, it was Trabzonspor who rose to the occasion, closing the gap and throwing the championship race wide open.
Onuachu Sets the Tone Early
Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu wasted no time in stamping his authority on the game, opening the scoring just minutes into the contest with a powerful header.
The goal marked a significant milestone for the Nigerian forward, as it was his first-ever strike against Galatasaray. It also took his league tally to 22 goals this season, further strengthening his position among the Süper Lig’s top scorers.
Trabzonspor’s aggressive start exposed early defensive frailties in the Galatasaray backline, setting the tone for a fiercely contested encounter.
Galatasaray Respond, But Nigerians Deliver the Knockout Blow
Galatasaray fought back in the second half and found an equaliser through Wilfried Singo, briefly restoring hope for the visitors.
However, the decisive moment of the match once again had a Nigerian imprint. Chibuike Nwaiwu restored Trabzonspor’s lead with a well-taken goal—his third of the season—after being set up by fellow Nigerian Anthony Nwakaeme, completing a brilliant team move orchestrated by the Super Eagles duo.
The trio of Onuachu, Nwaiwu, and Nwakaeme proved decisive, underlining the growing influence of Nigerian players in the Turkish top flight.
Osimhen’s Absence Looms Large
Galatasaray were notably without their talismanic striker Victor Osimhen, who is currently sidelined with a fractured forearm sustained in a UEFA Champions League clash.
Manager Okan Buruk later admitted that the absence of the Nigerian forward significantly affected his team’s attacking edge, highlighting just how crucial Osimhen has become to the Istanbul giants.
With Mauro Icardi leading the line in Osimhen’s absence, Galatasaray struggled to convert key chances and lacked their usual cutting edge in the final third.
Title Race Blown Wide Open
The result sees Trabzonspor move within touching distance of Galatasaray at the summit of the table, intensifying the battle for the Turkish Süper Lig crown.
For Galatasaray, the defeat serves as a major setback in their title pursuit, while Trabzonspor’s Nigerian contingent continues to play a pivotal role in their late push for glory.
As the season enters its decisive phase, all eyes will remain on both sides—and particularly on whether Osimhen can return in time to rescue Galatasaray’s title charge.
