Super Eagles defender stretchered off just before halftime in a match that ended 1-0 in Bremen’s favour.

Werder Bremen and Super Eagles defender, Felix Agu

Werder Bremen grabbed a hard-fought 1-0 win over newly promoted FC St. Pauli at the Weserstadion, but the victory was marred by a worrying injury to Nigerian international, Felix Agu.

The 26-year-old defender, who was named in Nigeria’s squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, had to be stretchered off in the 44th minute after a clash that left him unable to continue. Agu had been lively on the left flank, helping Bremen build from the back and control wide areas.

However, as St. Pauli pressed late in the first half, Agu went down awkwardly after what appeared to be a collision during a defensive clearance. Replays showed his foot may have been caught beneath an opposing player during a scramble in the box.

Medical staff immediately signaled for a substitution, and Agu was replaced by Isaac Schmidt. The sight of Agu being carried off visibly concerned the Bremen bench and with Nigeria’s qualifiers just days away, it also triggered alarm within the Super Eagles camp.

Post-match, Werder Bremen released a statement confirming that further medical examinations were scheduled, including MRI and X-rays to determine the full extent of the injury. The match itself was decided by a single goal in the second half, but all eyes were on Agu’s condition after the final whistle.

Agu’s injury now leaves Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle with a major decision to make ahead of Nigeria’s qualifiers against Lesotho (Oct. 11) and Benin Republic (Oct. 15). More updates are expected as club doctors assess treatment options.
