Nigerian forward faces weeks out after Champions League setback

Victor Osimhen has returned to Nigeria as he weighs up whether to undergo surgery following a serious injury sustained during Galatasaray’s UEFA Champions League clash against Liverpool.

The Super Eagles striker suffered a fractured right forearm during the heavy 4-0 defeat at Anfield after an early collision with Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konaté.

Injury Blow at Anfield

Osimhen’s night ended in pain after just 10 minutes when he landed awkwardly during an aerial duel. Despite visible discomfort, the Nigerian forward showed resilience by continuing until halftime before being substituted.

Subsequent medical examinations confirmed the fracture, with Galatasaray later placing his arm in a cast.

The injury compounded a difficult night for the Turkish giants, who crashed out of the Champions League with a 4-1 aggregate loss.

Return to Nigeria for Medical Assessment

Following the incident, Osimhen travelled to Nigeria during the international break to assess his treatment options and recovery plan.

Reports indicate that the 27-year-old will wait for swelling to subside before making a final decision on surgery, with medical experts closely monitoring his condition.

Surgery Decision Looms

If surgery is deemed necessary, Osimhen could be sidelined for up to six weeks, potentially missing key Turkish Super Lig fixtures including clashes against Trabzonspor, Kocaelispor, and Gençlerbirliği.

There are also concerns he could face a race against time to be fit for the high-profile Istanbul derby against Fenerbahçe in late April.

Setback for Club and Country

The injury has already ruled Osimhen out of Nigeria’s upcoming international fixtures, dealing a blow to the Super Eagles’ attacking options.

Widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most influential forwards, his absence could impact both club ambitions and national team preparations in the coming weeks.
