State government backs women’s football revival as club hosts UK-based investor team

Ahead of the 2025/2026 Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) season, Ibom Angels FC have received a major morale boost as the Akwa Ibom State Government pledged full support to the team’s campaign. This commitment came as representatives of UK-based African Sports Investor Limited (ASI) paid a visit to Uyo to inspect facilities and explore collaboration opportunities with the club.

The ASI delegation, led by founder and CEO Mrs. Abiola Ijasanmi, was welcomed by Elder Paul Bassey, the state’s Commissioner for Sports. The visit aligns with the state’s growing investment in sports development under Governor Umo Eno, whose administration views football; particularly women’s football as a key pillar in youth engagement and empowerment.

During the tour, ASI officials visited major facilities including the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium and the Uyo Township Stadium, where Ibom Angels train and play. They also interacted with the players and coaching staff, observing a full training session as part of their evaluation process.

ASI’s interest is part of a broader initiative to partner with elite women’s clubs in Nigeria, and Ibom Angels’ infrastructure, organisation, and youth development program appear to have left a strong impression. ASI Director of Operations, Mrs. Andrea Grainger, commended the state’s hospitality and expressed optimism about future collaboration.

Ibom Angels FC, under the leadership of Chairman Prince Ukeme Ukpong, has set its sights on continental qualification and long-term growth. With support now coming from both government and potential international investors, the club is well-positioned to make a serious impact in the NWFL this season and beyond.
