Nigeria’s women’s volleyball is making big waves—and not just at home. The spotlight is firmly on the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) team, who have taken center stage in continental volleyball this season.
Home Court Magic and a Historic Hosting Feat
In April 2025, Nigeria hosted the 39th Women’s African Volleyball Club Championship in Abuja—a rare continental tournament held outside North Africa. The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, officially opened the competition, bringing glamour and unity to the event.
From the first serve, the NCS team delivered. They crushed Cameroon’s Mayo Kani Evolution in straight sets—25-18, 25-17, 25-22—showcasing precision, teamwork, and ironclad defense in front of a roaring home crowd.
Breaking Records Before the Matches Began
Even before the tournament kicked off, Nigeria made history by securing the most club entries ever—21 teams—raising the bar for participation in the Women’s Club Championship. This wasn’t just a hosting job—it was a statement of ambition and growth.
What This Means for Nigerian Volleyball
- Infrastructure & Organizational Excellence: Nigeria has signaled that it can host world-class sporting events—vibrant, competitive, and inclusive.
- Raising the Bar for the Future: With this showcase, future editions of the tournament are likely to attract even broader participation—and perhaps spark more domestic talent development.
- Role Models in Spikes and Sets: Having top players like the NCS team dominate on home turf provides inspiration for young girls watching—this is proof that with skill and opportunity, they too can compete at the highest levels.
