Nigerian Premier Football League in Turmoil As Kun Khalifat Withdraws

Kun Khalifat FC Withdraws From NPFL Over Unfair Sanctions

In a dramatic development in Nigerian club football, Owerri-based Kun Khalifat FC announced its withdrawal from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) following sanctions imposed on the club for failing to honour its Matchday 24 fixture against El-Kanemi Warriors.

The decision sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s top flight, with the club describing the sanctions as unfair, disproportionate, and a “travesty of justice” — claiming the NPFL prioritises punishment over fairness and the development of clubs.

Missed Match Against El-Kanemi Warriors

The controversy stems from Kun Khalifat FC’s failure to appear for its scheduled league game against El-Kanemi Warriors in Maiduguri, prompting the NPFL to award a 3–0 walkover victory to the home side and impose disciplinary measures against Kun Khalifat.

As part of the sanctions, the NPFL:

 Forfeited three points from Kun Khalifat FC’s league tally.

 Awarded three goals to El-Kanemi Warriors.

 Imposed a ₦10 million fine (reportedly suspended for the rest of the season if no repeat offence occurs).

The league stated that Kun Khalifat breached its framework rules by not fulfilling the fixture — a decision it justified under established NPFL regulations.

In an official statement, Kun Khalifat FC’s ownership expressed deep disappointment, accusing NPFL organisers of bias and a lack of transparency in handling the situation.

“This punishment is not only unacceptable but a clear indication that the league’s management is more interested in penalising clubs than fostering growth and development,” the club said, according to reports.

The Owerri side added that it had provided “valid reasons” for its inability to honour the fixture including logistical and travel challenges. But felt these were ignored by league authorities.

Calling the sanctions a “travesty of justice,” Kun Khalifat FC announced its immediate withdrawal from the NPFL, saying it could no longer participate in what it described as an unjust system.

The abrupt withdrawal has sparked debate among fans, pundits, and football stakeholders about fair treatment of NPFL clubs, especially those operating with limited financial resources and logistic support.

Some critics argue that Kun Khalifat’s exit highlights deeper governance challenges in Nigeria’s top flight, while others have criticised the club’s decision as unprofessional and damaging to both the team’s reputation and the league’s overall image.

In a surprising turnaround, Kun Khalifat FC reversed its withdrawal decision less than 24 hours later, following talks with NPFL organisers. According to reports, both parties reached a constructive understanding enabling the club to resume its league campaign immediately.

The reinstatement allows Kun Khalifat to continue competing in the NPFL season, with the club expected to feature in upcoming fixtures after resolving the dispute with league management.
