Four‑time NPFL champions act decisively amid early season slump

Veteran Coach Muhammad Babaganaru

Kano, Nigeria — Four‑time Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) champions Kano Pillars find themselves in urgent need of a turnaround and the club’s management has made bold moves to spark change. The club has suspended Technical Adviser Evans Ogenyi and Chief Coach Ahmed Garba Yaro Yaro following a dismal start to the 2025/26 NPFL season.

In their place, the club appointed veteran coach Muhammad Babaganaru as Acting Technical Adviser with immediate effect. The announcement, released by the club’s Media and Communications Directorate, expressed confidence that Babaganaru who previously led the club to NPFL titles can stabilise the side.

The decision comes against the backdrop of mounting pressure: Pillars have managed only two wins, two draws and four losses in their opening eight games of the season; a record the management deemed unacceptable.

Further compounding the crisis, the club is serving sanctions including playing 10 home matches behind closed doors and a ₦9.5 million fine, along with a three‑point deduction after crowd disturbances at a recent fixture.

“Coach Babaganaru returns at a critical time,” said a club statement. “We believe his experience and familiarity with the club’s culture will help us regain momentum.”

For Babaganaru, this second return to the club where he won league honours is both a challenge and opportunity. The club’s supporters, known for their passion and expectations, will be watching closely as the interim era gets under way.

As Pillars navigate the mid‑season turbulence, they now face a clear directive: bounce back quickly, restore confidence, and climb the league table. The next few fixtures will be a test of whether the old guard can turn the tide.
