22-year-old forward, eligible for Super Eagles, reacts to his first senior call-up for Netherlands national football team ahead of World Cup qualifiers.

Born in The Hague, the 22-year-old forward Emanuel Emegha has long carried dual heritage – a Nigerian mother and a Togolese father. But when the day of his first senior-international call-up arrived, his reaction was plain: “I didn’t expect it.”
Late on Tuesday, Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman added Emegha to the senior squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, stepping in for the injured Wout Weghorst.
The call means that the striker, already eligible for the Super Eagles of Nigeria and even for Togo, is one step closer to earning what would effectively close the door to Nigeria’s senior invitation.
Heritage and Eligibility
Emegha grew up in the Dutch football system and has already represented the Netherlands at youth levels — U15, U19, U20 and U21. Because he has not yet played a senior competitive match for the Netherlands, he technically remains eligible to switch to Nigeria (or Togo). But his recent statements make his preference clear: “I believe one-hundred percent that I can have an impact on Oranje,” he said in May 2025.
And earlier, a Nigerian invitation reportedly came but was declined: “I have already been called by Nigeria, but I just want to play for the Netherlands,” he confirmed.
Club Form That Triggered The Call-Up
The immediate reason for the call-up is his form at RC Strasbourg Alsace in France’s Ligue 1. After joining the French side for around €13 million in July 2023, Emegha grew into a key figure. Reports say he scored 14 league goals in the 2024-25 season and made an impact this campaign with 4 goals in 5 starts early on. His physical presence; standing at 1.95 m combined with solid technical development and awareness, made him one of the most watched “Super Eagles-eligible” players in Europe.
Looking Ahead
Emegha’s pre-agreement move to Chelsea FC for summer 2026 has already been widely reported. The step up to a Premier League club further fortifies his international credentials and may have accelerated his national team call-up.
