Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets begin their campaign at the WAFU‑B U17 Championship on Wednesday with a match-up against Benin Republic’s U17 side (the “Baby Cheetahs”) at the Stade du Lycée Scientifique in Yamoussoukro.

 What’s at Stake

 This tournament doubles as the qualifying competition for the 2026 Africa U17 Cup of Nations, which in turn is the pathway to the 2026 FIFA U17 World Cup in Qatar.

 The Golden Eaglets are five‑time world champions at this age level, and will be looking to reaffirm their dominance in West Africa through this group stage clash.

The Eaglets are in Group A, which also includes Côte d’Ivoire, Niger Republic, Ghana, and Togo.

Early group results:

 Côte d’Ivoire defeated Niger Republic 2‑0 at the weekend.

 Togo and Ghana drew 1‑1.

Keys to Watch

 Eaglets’ attack vs Benin’s defence: Nigeria will aim to start strong, as they often do, relying on pace, creativity and physicality. Benin will likely try to disrupt the flow and make it difficult in midfield.

 Mental sharpness and discipline: In qualifying tournaments, narrow margins decide who advances. Avoiding errors, maintaining concentration, and seizing chances will matter a lot.

 Managing pressure: As favorites, Nigeria will have expectations. How well they handle that, especially in the early match, could set the tone for their campaign.
