Super Eagles captain shines off the bench as Turkish giants claim a hard-fought victory in the Czech Republic.
Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi made a memorable return from injury by providing the decisive assist as 10-man Besiktas secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Hradec Kralove in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League third qualifying round tie on Thursday.
The experienced Nigerian midfielder was introduced in the 76th minute at the Malsovicka Arena, just minutes after Besiktas had been reduced to 10 men following Kassoum Ouattara’s dismissal.
Despite their numerical disadvantage, the Turkish giants found the breakthrough four minutes later, with Ndidi playing a decisive role.
Ndidi Makes Instant Impact
Making his first appearance since recovering from injury, Ndidi wasted little time announcing his return.
The 29-year-old delivered a looping ball into the penalty area that caused problems for the Hradec Kralove defence. Defender Filip Cihak’s attempted clearance fell kindly to Semih Kilicsoy, who reacted quickest to head home the winner in the 80th minute.
The assist capped an encouraging comeback for the Super Eagles midfielder, whose composure and experience helped Besiktas regain control during the closing stages of the contest.
Besiktas Overcome Red Card
The visitors had controlled much of the opening exchanges but struggled to convert possession into clear-cut opportunities.
Hyeon-gyu Oh came closest before halftime when his powerful effort crashed against the crossbar, while Hradec Kralove threatened just before the break, only for Emirhan Topcu to produce a crucial goal-line clearance.
After the interval, Besiktas continued to press, with Orkun Kokcu forcing two impressive saves from goalkeeper Adam Zadrazil.
The game appeared to swing in the hosts’ favour after Kassoum Ouattara received a second yellow card in the 72nd minute, leaving Besiktas to finish the match with 10 men.
However, the sending-off failed to derail Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, who showed resilience before Ndidi and Kilicsoy combined for the decisive goal.
Nubel Preserves Valuable Advantage
Following Kilicsoy’s strike, Hradec Kralove threw numbers forward in search of an equaliser.
Goalkeeper Alexander Nubel produced several important saves in the closing stages to preserve Besiktas’ clean sheet and hand the Turkish club a slender but valuable first-leg advantage.
The two sides will meet again at Tupras Stadium in Istanbul on August 13, with the winners progressing to the UEFA Europa League playoff round.
For Ndidi, the performance offered an encouraging sign ahead of the new season, as the Nigerian midfielder returned from injury in impressive fashion and immediately reminded supporters of his influence in the heart of Besiktas’ midfield.
