Nigeria’s U-17 side suffers a second straight defeat ahead of decisive clash with hosts China.

Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets remain without a victory at the Four-Nation Invitational Tournament in China after suffering a 4-2 defeat to Australia in their second outing of the competition.

The result means the five-time FIFA U-17 World Cup champions have now lost both of their opening matches, having earlier fallen 3-2 to Tanzania. While the young Nigerians have shown flashes of quality in attack, defensive shortcomings have continued to undermine their performances.

Against Australia, the Golden Eaglets created scoring opportunities and managed to find the back of the net twice, but costly lapses in defence allowed the Australians to take control of the contest and secure all three points.

The latest Golden Eaglets vs Australia result in the China Four-Nation Invitational Tournament leaves Coach Uwejamomere Eboboritse and his technical crew with important issues to address before the team’s final fixture against tournament hosts China.

Across their opening two matches, Nigeria have scored four goals but conceded seven, highlighting the need for greater defensive organisation as preparations continue for upcoming continental assignments.

Despite the disappointing start, the tournament remains an important part of the Golden Eaglets’ development programme. The competition in Yinchuan is providing the coaching staff with an opportunity to assess players, test tactical systems and build team chemistry ahead of the WAFU B U-17 Championship, which will serve as the qualifying tournament for the 2027 Africa U-17 Cup of Nations.

Qualification for the continental championship is crucial, as the tournament will determine Africa’s representatives at the next FIFA U-17 World Cup.

Nigeria will now turn its attention to Saturday’s encounter against hosts China, hoping to finish the invitational tournament on a positive note. A strong performance would not only restore confidence within the squad but also provide valuable momentum before the team shifts its focus to the WAFU B qualifiers.

Although results have not gone in their favour, the experience of facing quality opposition from different footballing regions is expected to benefit the young squad as they continue their preparation for competitive action later this year.

The final match against China now offers the Golden Eaglets an opportunity to demonstrate improvement, tighten up defensively and end the tournament with an encouraging display before returning home.
