Board and management dissolved as audit exposes ₦2.4-billion accounting gap

On 23 October 2025, the Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, announced the immediate dissolution of the board and management of Lobi Stars Football Club, the Makurdi-based Nigeria Premier Football League side.

The governor’s office released a statement via the Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, saying the decision was taken to reposition the club for “greater efficiency, accountability and better performance” in national competitions.

The dissolution follows a white-paper released earlier this year which revealed that only ₦1.3 billion out of about ₦3.7 billion accrued to the club over a multi-year period was accounted for leaving a gap of around ₦2.4 billion.

In that forensic audit, three former vice-chairmen were directed to refund millions of naira to the state coffers. Governor Alia’s statement thanked the outgoing board for their efforts, but emphasised that “unacceptable performance and accounting must no longer define the club.”

Members of the dissolved board have been directed to hand over all official club documents, assets and responsibilities to the Commissioner for Youth, Sports and Creativity, to ensure a smooth transition. For Lobi Stars, this marks a pivotal juncture. The club once title contenders and a respected force in Nigerian football has struggled in recent seasons, suffering financial, administrative and on-pitch setbacks.

The board’s dissolution signals a reset. For supporters in Benue and nationwide, the question now is: will the next leadership restore stability, performance and confidence?
