Lomé, Togo — The Super Falcons of Nigeria have been dealt an unwelcome blow just before a high-stakes qualifying tie. Star midfielder Jennifer Echegini has been ruled out of both legs of the 2026 WAFCON qualifier against Benin Republic due to a hamstring injury sustained while playing for Paris Saint-Germain.
Echegini, who earned her place in Super Falcons lore by scoring Nigeria’s winning goal in the 2024 WAFCON final, will miss the first leg in Lomé and the return leg in Abeokuta. The news is a gut punch for head coach Justine Madugu, whose squad was already forming around the creative midfield influence she provided.
However, Madugu remains publicly composed. He affirms that Nigeria still has quality and spirit in the squad to overcome the setback. “We have capable replacements,” he said, as the team readies themselves for battle.
With Echegini out, pressure shifts to Rasheedat Ajibade, the team captain and PSG winger, to marshal the midfield and inspire her teammates. Also expected to carry weight are forward Esther Okoronkwo and seasoned defenders like Osinachi Ohale.
The Super Falcons’ camp in Lomé has grown as more players arrive. Portugal‑based Christy Ucheibe, goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, and Saudi-based defender Ashleigh Plumptre among them. As of this moment, 11 players are confirmed in camp.
While the path ahead is tougher without Echegini, Nigeria will lean on their WAFCON champion momentum. The Falcons made history earlier this year, clawing back from a 2‑0 deficit to beat hosts Morocco 3‑2 in the final and lift their 10th continental crown.
The first leg against Benin is scheduled for October 23 in Lomé; the return leg will be played on October 28 at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex in Abeokuta.
