Paris Saint-Germain’s Ajibade and AFC Toronto’s Okoronkwo among 10 elite nominees for African Women’s Player of the Year.

Nigeria’s flag is flying high once again on the continental stage as Super Falcons stars Rasheedat Ajibade and Esther Okoronkwo have been nominated for the 2025 CAF Women’s Player of the Year award. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) released the shortlist on October 17, confirming the inclusion of the two Nigerian forwards among Africa’s elite.
Rasheedat Ajibade, a fan favourite and Super Falcons captain, has enjoyed a standout year. Now playing in France with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) Women, Ajibade has not only dazzled at club level but was pivotal during Nigeria’s campaign at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), where the Falcons clinched a record 10th title. Her blend of speed, leadership, and goal-scoring ability has made her a household name both at home and in diaspora.
Equally impressive is Esther Okoronkwo, whose sharp rise in the game continues to turn heads. Currently based in Canada with AFC Toronto, Okoronkwo has carved a niche for herself as a dynamic forward with an eye for goal and a knack for assists. Her consistent performances in the North American league and her key contributions during national team outings have earned her a well-deserved place on the continent’s most prestigious shortlist.
The duo’s nominations are a major win for Nigeria, reinforcing the country’s reputation as a factory for world-class female footballers. Their presence on the shortlist also continues a proud tradition. Nigerian players have historically dominated this category, with the likes of Asisat Oshoala winning it a record five times.
In total, 10 players were nominated for the Women’s Player of the Year award. Other contenders include Ghana’s Portia Boakye, Zambia’s Barbra Banda and Racheal Kundananji, and Morocco’s Ghizlaine Chebbak. But with two Nigerians in the mix, hopes are high that the title will once again return to West Africa.
Also flying Nigeria’s flag is goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, nominated in the Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year category. Nnadozie’s commanding performances between the posts, especially during WAFCON and in the UEFA Women’s Champions League with Paris FC, make her a strong contender for the honour.
This year’s CAF Awards ceremony is shaping up to be a celebration of Nigerian excellence, not just recognition of talent but a testament to the depth of quality coming out of Nigerian women’s football. For young girls in Lagos, Kaduna, Enugu and beyond, Ajibade and Okoronkwo’s nominations are more than headlines. They are dreams validated.
As the continent waits for the final announcement, Nigeria watches with pride. Whether the award returns home or not, Rasheedat and Esther have already won in the hearts of millions.
